Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the right to question particular decisions from the official, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
