The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month break that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others alternatively handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
