Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
