Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
