Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he to later acknowledge that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
